I, Kimberley Little, am the designer behind the name and here's a little info about me and how KL Co. came to be. In retrospect, I have no clue why it took 50+ years for me to see the light, for the ques and clues were very clear!
Age 6: my parents hoping to busy me in a décor store where they hoped to find a new look for the kitchen and dinning room, set me on a mission with paint chips in hand to find a wallpaper that matched. Two hours later with 3 wallpaper options, swatches of coordinating drapery fabric and sconces I thought would match our existing chandelier better we headed home to make some decisions.
Age 8: Not only did I not mind the sofas at mom's house didn't match, I liked their differences. First because they fit my mother's free spirit and "all are welcome" personality. Second, because the orange wide whale corduroy mid century modern was firmer and better for sitting up to read or color while the green crushed velvet camelback was worn down just enough to be the "loungey" TV watching spot of choice.
Age 10: When moving to our split level ranch I questioned the the decision not because the house was a half the size of our previous home and looked like every other house in the neighborhood, but because the shag rug was a different color in every single room, including the grass green hallway, which made me anxious and the rooms feel small.
By 28 I had an understanding of my love and capacity for architecture and interior design, as having done nothing further with my BA of psychology (yes, I know what your thinking), I enrolled in a Master's of Interior Architecture and Design at New England School of Art and Design. 2.5 years into my successful 3 year program, I was having my first child (I know, bad timing) and moving to a new state for my husband's business. 20+ years, 3 states, several homes, multiple jobs and 2 incredible daughters, with the unending support of my husband (the 1 and only), I am here where I am supposed to be.
No one style defines the way KL Co. creates spaces.
Cues from existing architecture, color composition, and purpose of space amongst other attributes, can all be important design factors. Above all, what you, as the client, hopes to draw aesthetically and functionally from the space is most important and influential.
No mater what form a home or a room takes on, it must reflect the client's vision as there is no one style fits all. Through the process of discussing requirements, preferences and goals for the space we will decipher a single style or compilation of styles you can call your own.
Active listening and clear collaboration with clients and contractors is the key. Whether clients are building or redesigning a portion of or an entire home for themselves or investment purposes the approach remains essentially the same.
Client Consultation: Understanding the scope of work including the client's lifestyle, requirements, wishes and budget through discussion and visual preferences. We will talk about what you think/know you want to do and perhaps you share your Pinterest pages with me.
Space Planning: Determining effective use of space with reference to function and flow. This maybe when a decision to change the kitchen layout or down size the scale of your living room furniture happens.
Concept development: Guiding principals and or theme of project based on the client's needs and wants in conjunction with designer's skills. We choose a color and style theme for your investment property so it will stand out from all the other vacation rentals in the area.
Materials Selection: Sourcing and selecting materials, furniture, finishes, fabrics etc. based on the concept and functional needs. This includes flooring to lighting and everything in between. We could be basing all material choices on your beloved painting rich with textured jewel tones or the fact your rental property needs commercial grade everything as it is rented for 44 weeks a year to 44 different families.
Contractor Collaboration: If a project requires construction or renovation the designer will work with the client's contractors or may secure her own architects, plumbers, electricians, kitchen and bath designers, etc... Coordination of shipping and storage of materials as well as drawings and instruction for implementation and project management may also be required.
Curation and Final Touches: When contractors have completed work, the space is ready for selected furniture, window treatments, art, accessories etc. All items will be thoughtfully arranged and curated to the clients satisfaction.
If Our network is vast! From general contractors to furniture companies and artists, we've got every step of the process covered!
